Biography

Blessed Bronislaw Markiewicz, born on 13 July 1842 in Pruchnik, Poland, was the sixth child of John Markiewicz and Marianna Gryziecka. His father served as the mayor of Pruchnik. Raised in a devoutly Catholic family, Bronislaw faced a challenging period during his education when he experienced the anti-Church atmosphere prevailing at his school, which nearly caused him to lose his faith.

Undeterred, Bronislaw pursued his calling and entered the seminary at Przemysl in 1863. His dedication and passion for serving God led to his ordination on 15 September 1867 in the diocese of Przemysl for Latins. Over the course of his ministry, he served as a parish priest at Harta and the cathedral of Przemysl for six years.

Recognized for his intellectual abilities, Bronislaw pursued further studies at the University of Leopoli and the University of Cracow. In 1882, he began teaching pastoral theology at the seminary in Przemysl, sharing his knowledge and helping shape future priests.

However, Bronislaw felt a deep spiritual longing and a desire for a different way of life. In November 1885, he joined the Salesians, a religious congregation founded by Saint John Bosco, near Turin, Italy. Under the guidance of Saint John Bosco, he became a spiritual student and developed a profound understanding of the Salesian spirituality. Bronislaw made his final vows as a Salesian on 25 March 1887.

Tragically, in 1889, Bronislaw contracted tuberculosis, an illness that nearly claimed his life. Despite this setback, his unwavering dedication to his calling and love for the youth motivated him to return to Poland. On 23 March 1892, he arrived back in his homeland, where he began his ministry as a parish priest in Miejsce Piastowe.

Bronislaw's compassion for the underprivileged and orphaned children inspired him to establish a trade school in Miejsce Piastowe, providing education and vocational training to numerous disadvantaged boys. The school gained significant recognition and soon expanded its reach, accommodating hundreds of children under his care.

Realizing the need for a broader organization to support his youth ministry, Bronislaw founded the Society of Moderation and Work in 1898. Based on the spiritual teachings of Saint John Bosco, this society aimed to educate and guide young people towards a virtuous and productive life. An associated magazine, Moderation and Work, began publication on 16 July 1898, spreading the message of the society to a wider audience.

Driven by his dedication to assisting vulnerable children, Bronislaw also initiated an orphanage in Pawlikowice, which quickly became home to over 400 residents. The relentless work and the strain it placed on his health eventually took its toll. At the age of 69, on 29 January 1912, Bronislaw Markiewicz succumbed to complications related to tuberculosis and passed away in Miejsce Piastowe, Poland.

Bronislaw's exceptional devotion and tireless efforts in youth ministry earned him veneration, and he was revered by the faithful as a Blessedd. Pope John Paul II recognized his holiness and declared him Venerable on 2 July 1994. On 19 June 2005, Pope Benedict XVI beatified Bronislaw Markiewicz, acknowledging his beatification during a celebration presided by Cardinal Jozef Glemp in Pilsudski Square, Warsaw, Poland.

The life of Blessed Bronislaw Markiewicz stands as a testament to his unwavering faith, deep love for the youth, and his commitment to serving them selflessly. His legacy remains alive through the Salesian congregation and the ongoing works of the Society of Moderation and Work, which continue to impact the lives of young people.
