Blessed Boniface Zukowski

Feast Day: April 10

Birth: January 13, 1913
Death: April 10, 1942
Blessed Boniface Zukowski, also known as Bonifacy Zukowski and Piotr Zukowski, was born on 13 January 1913 in Rapa-Baran, Nemencine, Vilniaus rajonas, Lithuania. He was the son of Andrzej Zukowski and Albina Walkiewicz and was raised on a farm.
At the young age of 16, Boniface entered the Order of Friars Minor Conventual in Niepokalanów in Teresin, Poland. He took the name Bonifacy and made his solemn profession on 2 August 1935. In the convent, Boniface worked at the house's printing presses, dedicating his efforts to publishing The Knight of the Immaculate, a magazine started by Saint Maximilian Kolbe.
Boniface played a vital role in supporting Saint Maximilian Kolbe's work and spreading devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary through the publication. However, on 14 October 1941, the Gestapo arrested Boniface for his involvement with the printing presses and his attempts to protect them. He was imprisoned in Warsaw, Poland, where he spent his time ministering to other prisoners, providing them with spiritual support and consolation.
Sadly, Boniface's journey of persecution did not end there. He was later transported to the Dachau concentration camp, where he was subjected to forced labor in harsh weather conditions. Due to the lack of progress in his work, he was beaten by the camp authorities. Eventually, Boniface succumbed to mistreatment and died of pneumonia on 10 April 1942, in the camp infirmary of Dachau, Oberbayern, Germany.
Throughout his trials and tribulations, Boniface remained steadfast in his faith. He continued to serve his fellow prisoners, providing solace and spiritual guidance even amidst his own suffering.
Recognizing his valor and sacrifice, Pope John Paul II declared Boniface Zukowski a martyr on 26 March 1999. On 13 June 1999, during a beatification ceremony in Warsaw, Poland, Pope John Paul II officially elevated Boniface to the rank of "Blessed," honoring his supreme commitment to God and his courageous witness to the Gospel.
Blessed Boniface Zukowski's feast days are celebrated on 10 April, the day of his death, and 12 June, commemorating his inclusion among the 108 Martyrs of World War II. His life serves as an inspiration to all who seek to emulate his unwavering faith, selfless service, and ultimate sacrifice for the greater glory of God.
