Blessed Bonaventura Relli, also known as Bonaventura of Palazzolo, was a devout Catholic priest and Franciscan friar who dedicated his life to spreading the Word of God and defending the Catholic faith. Born in Palazzolo, Italy, Bonaventure felt a strong calling to the religious life from a young age.
Initially considering joining the Augustinians, he ultimately chose to become a Franciscan in Giaveno, Italy. After his ordination, he was sent to the convent of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Turin, where he embarked on a mission to combat the influence of the heretical group known as the Waldensians in the region. Bonaventure's powerful preaching and his unwavering devotion to the Virgin Mary became central aspects of his ministry.
His dedication to Mary led him to develop a strong devotion to her under the title Madonna of Crea. As a testament to his deep love for the Blessed Mother, Bonaventure began painting images of Mary on silk. These meticulously crafted artworks served as tangible reminders of his faith and were often distributed to the people he encountered during his preaching.
In recognition of his exceptional zeal and persuasive preaching, Pope Urban VIII appointed Bonaventure to embark on a courageous mission. From 1634 to 1643, he traveled to the Ottoman Turk-controlled regions of Albania and Serbia, where he fearlessly preached the Gospel and defended the Catholic faith. Despite facing numerous challenges and dangers in this hostile environment, Bonaventure's unwavering commitment to his mission remained steadfast.
Blessed Bonaventura Relli lived a simple and austere life, eschewing worldly possessions and comforts. His humility and selflessness were deeply admired by those who crossed his path.
