Blessed Berthold of Scheide, also known as Berthold of Scheda, was a devout priest and a member of the Premonstratensian order. He was born in the 12th century near Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein, in modern Germany. Berthold was the older brother of Blessed Menrich of Lübeck, with whom he would later found the Cistercian convent of Vrundeberg Abbey in Westphalia.
Berthold initially served as a lay brother at the Scheide monastery near Fröndenberg-on-der-Ruhr in Westphalia. However, his spiritual journey led him to become a hermit and reside at Berg Haslei. It was here that he began to speak out against immorality, attracting numerous spiritual seekers who gathered under the shade of a large oak tree. To better minister to these individuals, Berthold constructed a hermitage and chapel, which also housed an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary that his father had brought from the Holy Land.
His commitment to spreading the teachings of the faith and mentoring those on the path of spiritual growth earned him a reputation for holiness. Berthold's dedication and words of wisdom attracted countless followers who sought his guidance.
Berthold passed away around the year 1214 due to natural causes. He was laid to rest at the Scheda monastery near Fröndenberg-on-der-Ruhr, Westphalia. Although the exact date of his birth and death is uncertain, his feast day is celebrated on July 13th. Some calendars also commemorate him on June 20th.
