Biography

Blessed Bertha Dealberti of Cavriglia, also known as Bertha de Bardi, Bertha de’Alberti, Bertha d’Alberti, or simply Berta, was born around 1106 on the family estate in Florence, Tuscany, Italy. She was the daughter of Lothario di Ugo, Count of Vernio, and grew up in a noble and devout family.

Bertha entered religious life and became a Vallombrosan Benedictine nun at the Saint Felicitas convent in Florence. During her time there, she had the opportunity to work closely with Blessed Qualdo Galli, another prominent figure in the Vallombrosan Order. Together, they dedicated themselves to promoting spiritual renewal and the reform of monastic life.

In 1153, Bertha was appointed as the reforming abbess of the convent of Santa Maria de Cavriglia in Fiesole, Italy. She served in this capacity for the remaining ten years of her life. Under her leadership, the convent flourished, both in terms of increased numbers of religious sisters and their reputation for deep spirituality.

Bertha's dedication and commitment to her order were truly exemplary. Her leadership and influence were so profound that she is often considered the founder of the female branch of the Vallombrosan Order. Through her own virtuous life and the reforms she implemented, Bertha set a profound example for other Vallombrosan leaders, particularly for female religious.

Although specific details about her death are not available, the life and contributions of Blessed Bertha Dealberti of Cavriglia continue to inspire and serve as a reminder of the transformative power of faith and spiritual leadership. She is venerated by the Church, and her feast days are celebrated on March 24th, April 6th in some calendars, and the first Sunday in August in the areas of Montano and Cavriglia, Italy. Despite not having a specific representation commonly associated with her, her spiritual legacy lives on among those who follow her example.
