Blessed Bernardo Montagudo

Biography

Blessed Bernardo Montagudo, also known as Bernardo de Carrión or Bernardo de Aranda, was a Mercedarian friar who was accepted into the Order by Saint Peter Nolasco. He served as the Bishop of Zaragoza, Spain.

Born in an unknown date and place, Bernardo Montagudo dedicated his life to the service of God and joined the Mercedarian Order, a religious order founded for the redemption of Christian captives held by Muslims. He was acknowledged for his piety, devotion, and commitment to the mission of the Order.

As a member of the Mercedarians, Bernardo Montagudo took part in the rescue and ransoming of Christian prisoners. This work involved fundraising, negotiation with captors, and physically liberating the enslaved Christians. He worked tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of those trapped in captivity, not only through monetary means but also through spiritual guidance.

Blessed Bernardo Montagudo passed away in 1239 of natural causes. He was laid to rest in the cathedral of Zaragoza, Spain, where his memory is still revered.
