Feast Day: August 22
Birth: November 7, 1604
Blessed Bernard Perani, also known as Bernard Offida, Bernard Offidski, Bernard z Offidy, and Dominic, was born on November 7, 1604, in Villa d’Appignano, Italy. He was the third child of a devout peasant family and was baptized on the day of his birth. In his youth, Bernard worked as a shepherd in the fields.
At the age of 22, Bernard joined the Capuchin Order as a lay brother in 1626. For the next seven years, he humbly served as a cook within the Order. However, his true virtues became evident through his charity towards the poor, his deep study of scripture and devotional writings, and his spiritual insights.
One of the notable aspects of Blessed Bernard Perani's spiritual life was his profound devotion to the Eucharist. During Eucharistic adoration, he would often enter into ecstatic states, sometimes seen levitating, and radiating an inner light. These mystical experiences further affirmed his holiness and closeness to God.
Throughout his life, Bernard continued to grow in holiness, dedicating himself to a life of prayer, study, and service. His love for the poor and his commitment to Christ inspired those around him.
Blessed Bernard Perani died in 1694 of natural causes, having lived a life of great faith and virtue. His reputation for sanctity and the many reported miracles attributed to his intercession led to his beatification on May 25, 1795, by Pope Pius VI.
On August 22, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast day of Blessed Bernard Perani, honoring his exemplary life and his intercession for the faithful. Though there is no specific representation associated with him, his spiritual and mystical experiences make him an inspiration for those seeking a deeper connection with God.
Through his devotion, selfless service, and commitment to the Eucharist, Blessed Bernard Perani continues to be a shining example of holiness and a source of inspiration for believers today.
