Biography

Blessed Benvenuto Mareni, also known as Benventuto of Recanati, Benevenutus, Benvenutus, or Benvenute, was a 13th-century Franciscan Conventual lay brother in Recanati, Italy. He was born in Recanati and dedicated his life to God, joining the Franciscan order as a lay brother.

Benvenuto Mareni worked diligently at his monastery as a cook, fulfilling his duties with great care and dedication. However, it was during his free time, spent in prayer, that he experienced extraordinary mystical encounters. Both during prayer and Mass, he would frequently enter states of rapture, where he would receive profound visions and ecstasies.

Legend has it that during one of his visions, Blessed Benvenuto was granted the rare privilege of holding the Infant Christ. This highly significant event was a testament to his deep spiritual devotion and the divine favor bestowed upon him.

One particular incident immortalizing Benvenuto's faithfulness and spiritual calling occurred when he entered a trance that lasted longer than usual. Due to this lengthy state of ecstasy, he arrived late to his duties in the monastery kitchen, only to discover an angel already present, gracefully taking over the task of cooking. This miraculous occurrence further solidified his reputation for holiness and divine intervention.

Blessed Benvenuto Mareni's devoutness and unwavering commitment to prayer and the Franciscan way of life earned him great admiration and respect within the community. He was venerated for his extraordinary piety and the profound spiritual experiences he encountered.

On May 5, 1269, Blessed Benvenuto passed away in his hometown of Recanati, Italy, from natural causes. He was laid to rest at the church of San Franceso in Recanati, where his holy presence continues to be venerated.

Recognizing his exceptional holiness and the miracles associated with his intercession, Pope Pius VI beatified Benvenuto Mareni on September 17, 1796, granting him the official title of "Blessed." This recognition, known as "cultus confirmation," solidifies his place among the saints and ensures his continued remembrance within the Catholic Church.
