Feast Day: January 27
Blessed Benvenuta of Perugia, also known as Benvenuta Bojani, was one of the first Poor Clare nuns and a close associate of Saint Clare of Assisi. She was born in Perugia, a city in central Italy, during the 12th century, but the exact date of her birth remains unknown.
At a young age, Benvenuta's spiritual journey led her to the San Damiano convent in Assisi where she joined the Order of Poor Clares in 1213. It was here that she encountered Saint Clare of Assisi, the founder of the order. Benvenuta's devotion and commitment to the teachings of Saint Clare soon made her a cherished friend, companion, and spiritual student of the revered saint.
Through her exemplary life, Benvenuta embodied the virtues cherished by the Poor Clares. Her dedication to poverty, humility, and selflessness served as a model for her fellow nuns and earned her great respect within the Order. In 1252, she was called upon to provide testimony during the canonization process of Saint Clare, a testament to the profound impact she had made within the religious community.
Benvenuta continued to live a life of deep devotion until her passing. She died around 1257 in Assisi, Italy, and was laid to rest at the convent of San Damiano. However, in 1260, her remains were transferred to the convent of San Giorgio in Assisi. Despite her humble nature, her sanctity and piety did not go unnoticed, and she came to be venerated by the faithful as a holy woman.
Although the exact details of her beatification are unknown, Blessed Benvenuta of Perugia's connection to the esteemed Saint Clare, her commitment to the principles of the Poor Clares, and her significance in the canonization process all contribute to her reputation as a blessed member of the Catholic Church. To this day, her feast day is commemorated on January 27th, a reminder of her devotion and unwavering faith.
