Throughout his time as a courtier to Emperor Henry III, Benno's wisdom and prudence shone, earning him the admiration and respect of the Emperor. Recognizing his exceptional qualities, Emperor Henry III appointed Benno as the Bishop of Osnabruck, Germany, in 1068. His tenure as bishop coincided with the turbulent disputes between Emperor Henry IV and Pope Gregory VII, known as the Investiture Controversy. In this conflict over the appointment of bishops and investiture with ecclesiastical power, Benno found himself caught in the middle. Being the Bishop of Osnabruck, he inevitably became entangled in the political and ecclesiastical struggles of the time.
Despite the challenging circumstances, Benno demonstrated unwavering commitment to the Catholic Church's teachings and the spiritual well-being of his diocese. He courageously advocated for the Church's independence and sought to reconcile the opposing factions, always striving for peace and unity. Benno's diplomacy and grace earned him a reputation as a fair mediator, respected by both the empire and the papacy.
In addition to his pastoral duties, Benno's profound faith and desire for God's glory led him to found Iburg Abbey in Bad Iburg, Germany. This religious institution became a beacon of spiritual life and education, fostering the growth of faith and knowledge among its members. The abbey flourished under Benno's guidance, becoming a haven for monastic life and a center for religious studies.
Blessed Benno of Osnabruck's devotion to God and his tireless efforts to promote righteousness and peace left an indelible mark on the faithful of his diocese and the wider Catholic community. He passed away in 1088 at Iburg Abbey and Castle in Bad Iburg, Germany, having dedicated his life to serving God and his fellow believers.
