Biography

Blessed Bartolomé Blanco Márquez, born on 25 November 1914 in Pozoblanco, Córdoba, Spain, was a young layman who lived during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War. He was raised by his uncles and local Salesian brothers after losing his mother at the tender age of three, followed by the tragic death of his father when Bartolome was 12. Despite these early hardships, Bartolomé's strong faith and natural leadership qualities shone through.

Growing up, Bartolomé actively participated in the Catholic Church's activities and became a member of Catholic Action, a lay organization dedicated to promoting Catholic values and fostering a deeper spiritual life. He became a catechist, dedicating himself to teaching others about the beliefs and practices of the Catholic faith. Bartolomé's dedication to spreading the teachings of the Church led him to join the Salesian Cooperators, a group of lay Catholics who collaborate with the Salesian religious order in various apostolic endeavors.

In addition to his active involvement in the Church, Bartolomé also worked as a social worker, employing his profound understanding of the Church's teachings on social doctrine to aid those in need. His mastery of these teachings allowed him to address the root causes of social injustices and provide practical support to those affected by poverty and inequality. Bartolomé's commitment to social service demonstrated his deep love for God and neighbor.

However, Bartolomé's faith and dedication to social justice would tragically lead to his martyrdom during the Spanish Civil War. On 2 October 1936, in Jaén, Spain, he was shot and killed for his refusal to renounce his Catholic faith. His courageous witness to Christ's teachings and his unwavering commitment to the Church ultimately cost him his life.

Recognizing his heroic virtues and sacrificial death, Pope Benedict XVI declared Bartolomé Blanco Márquez a martyr on 26 June 2006. Later, on 28 October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, elevating him to the status of Blessed within the Catholic Church.

Blessed Bartolomé Blanco Márquez remains an inspiring example of youthful devotion, leadership, and unwavering faithfulness to the teachings of the Catholic Church. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire Catholics around the world to live their faith fearlessly and to strive for social justice.
