Death: May 6, 1330
Blessed Bartolomeo Puccifranceschi, also known as Bartolomeo of Montepulciano, was born in the latter 13th century in the town of Montepulciano, Tuscany, Italy. He was born into a wealthy Tuscan noble family and enjoyed a comfortable upbringing. As he grew older, he married and became the father of four children.
Bartolomeo was known for his generosity and deep devotion to serving the poor, especially during times of famine. However, despite his comfortable life and social status, he felt a calling from God to dedicate his life to religious service. In 1290, when his children had grown, Bartolomeo made the courageous decision to renounce his wealth and family ties to join the Franciscan Order.
He entered the convent of San Francisco in his hometown of Montepulciano, where he embarked on his new life as a Franciscan friar. Bartolomeo's choice to become a friar stunned the locals, who considered it an act of madness to abandon such a privileged social position. However, Bartolomeo remained steadfast in his devotion to God and proved to be a model of religious dedication.
During his time as a friar, Bartolomeo displayed an exceptional commitment to his faith and the teachings of Saint Francis of Assisi. He wholeheartedly embraced the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, leading a life focused on prayer, penance, and ministering to the spiritual needs of others.
Blessed Bartolomeo Puccifranceschi's remarkable spiritual journey was marked by numerous mystical experiences. He was blessed with visionary encounters, receiving apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the angels. His extraordinary faith and devotion to prayer granted him the gift of performing miracles, reinforcing his reputation as a revered holy man.
After a life dedicated to serving God and his fellow human beings, Bartolomeo Puccifranceschi peacefully passed away on May 6, 1330, in Montepulciano. He was buried in the church of his monastery, where his relics became objects of veneration for the faithful.
In recognition of his exemplary life and spiritual holiness, Blessed Bartolomeo Puccifranceschi was beatified on June 24, 1880, by Pope Leo XIII. His beatification confirmed his cultus or the widespread devotion he had received over the years.
In 1930, the relics of Blessed Bartolomeo were transferred from the church of his monastery to the church of San Agostino in Montepulciano. The faithful continue to honor and venerate this holy Franciscan friar, whose life of selfless service and profound faith remains an inspiration to this day.
