Feast Day: May 29
Blessed Barbara Sim Agi was a lay woman born in 1783 in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. She came from a Christian family and was brought to the faith by her brother, Sim Nak-hun. Inspired by her brother's strong faith and dedication, Barbara consecrated herself to God, choosing to live a life of devotion without joining a religious order.
During the Shinyu Persecution, a period marked by severe persecution of Christians in Korea, Barbara tirelessly worked to support and nourish the Christian community. Despite the risks and dangers, she fearlessly distributed religious literature, catechized others, and helped to provide shelter and support for fellow believers. Her courageous actions in the face of adversity and her commitment to her faith are a testament to her profound love for God and her fellow Christians.
Tragically, Barbara's unwavering dedication to her faith would ultimately cost her life. She was martyred in 1801 when she was beaten to death at the police headquarters at the Small West Gate in Seoul, South Korea. Her valiant sacrifice and martyrdom serve as a powerful example of steadfastness and devotion to the Catholic faith.
Blessed Barbara Sim Agi is one of the Martyrs of Korea, a group of 103 individuals who were beatified by Pope Francis on August 15, 2014. Her feast days are celebrated on May 29 and September 20, along with the other Martyrs of Korea. These dates offer a special opportunity for Catholics worldwide to honor and commemorate her life, remembering her as a martyr who gave her life for her faith.
Blessed Barbara Sim Agi's beatification was a significant milestone in recognizing her sanctity and martyrdom. On February 7, 2014, Pope Francis declared the veneration of these Korean martyrs, including Barbara Sim Agi. This declaration by the Holy Father showcases the enduring impact and profound devotion that these martyrs had in spreading and preserving the Catholic faith in Korea.
Blessed Barbara Sim Agi's life and martyrdom continue to inspire and encourage Catholics around the world. Her unwavering commitment to her faith and her selfless actions in the face of persecution serve as a powerful reminder of the strength and courage one can find in Christ. As a lay woman who consecrated herself to God, Barbara Sim Agi demonstrates that holiness and devotion to God can be lived out in all walks of life. Her example challenges believers to faithfully live out their Christian call, even in the face of adversity.
