Biography

Blessed Baltasar De Torres Arias was a Jesuit priest and martyr, born on 14 December 1563 in Granada, Spain. Not much is known about his early life and education, but his fervent devotion to the Catholic Church led him to join the Society of Jesus, commonly known as the Jesuits.

In 1587, Baltasar De Torres Arias was ordained as a priest and soon after, he was sent on a mission to Japan, where Catholic missionaries were spreading the faith despite the persecution they faced. Baltasar dedicated himself to the evangelization of the Japanese people, learning their language and customs to better connect with them.

For several years, Baltasar tirelessly worked in different parts of Japan, preaching the Gospel and administering the sacraments to the growing number of converts. However, during this time, the Shogunate, fearing the growing influence of Christianity, began intensifying their persecution of Japanese Catholics.

By the early 17th century, the situation had become dire for the Catholic community in Japan. In June 1626, Baltasar De Torres Arias, along with several other Jesuit priests and laypeople, was arrested for his religious activities and was condemned to death.

On 20 June 1626, Baltasar was burned alive in Nagasaki, enduring his martyrdom with great courage and faith. The authorities, fearing his posthumous veneration, threw his ashes into the sea, ensuring that no relics remained.

After his death, Baltasar De Torres Arias became widely venerated among the faithful, revered for his unwavering faith and dedication to the Catholic Church in the face of adversity. His martyrdom was formally recognized by Pope Pius IX on 26 February 1866, when he issued a decree of martyrdom.

A year later, on 7 May 1867, Pope Pius IX beatified Baltasar De Torres Arias, acknowledging his sacrifice and holiness. Although no specific representations or devotions are attributed to him, his feast day is celebrated on 20 June, and he is also honored on 4 February as one of the Jesuit Martyrs of Japan.

Blessed Baltasar De Torres Arias serves as an inspiring example of faith and devotion, reminding us of the great sacrifices made by Catholic missionaries and martyrs throughout history. His memory lives on among the faithful as a testament to the power of faith in the face of persecution and adversity.
