Biography

Blessed Baldassarre Velasquez, also known as Baldassarre of La Muela, was a Mercedarian friar who lived during the 16th century in Zaragoza, Spain. Unfortunately, very little information is available about his early life, including his exact birth date, as historical records are scarce.

Baldassarre's life is primarily known for the events surrounding his imprisonment and subsequent martyrdom. He was captured and held captive by the Saracens in La Muela, Zaragoza, during a time when religious tensions were high between Christians and Muslims. The Saracens, in an attempt to undermine his faith, ordered Baldassarre to renounce Christianity. However, instead of succumbing to their demands, he bravely chose to defy them by openly preaching against their vices and wickedness.

His fearless proclamation of the Christian faith struck a nerve with the Saracens, who were quick to perceive him as a threat. In response to his steadfastness and refusal to renounce his beliefs, Baldassarre, along with 16 other Christians whose names have unfortunately been lost to us, was condemned to death.

In 1588, Baldassarre Velasquez faced martyrdom as he was executed by the Saracens. The specific method of his execution is recorded as death by arrows, a painful and cruel fate that he endured for his unwavering commitment to Christ.

Following his martyrdom, Baldassarre's holy example and devotion to the Catholic faith were highly regarded by the Mercedarian religious order. Consequently, his feast day is celebrated on September 11th by the Mercedarians, the religious community he belonged to. It is a day of remembrance and gratitude for his selfless sacrifice.

While Baldassarre Velasquez's life story is somewhat limited by the scarcity of available historical details, his commitment to his faith and his courageous stand against persecution remain an enduring testament to the strength of his character. Though not officially venerated or beatified at this time, his memory and sacrifice continue to inspire and serve as a reminder of the challenges faced by countless individuals devoted to their beliefs throughout history.
