Biography

Blessed Aurelio Da Vinalesa, also known as José Ample Alcaide, was born on 3 February 1896 in Vinalesa, Valencia, Spain. He was the third of seven children in his family. In the year 1912, Aurelio joined the Franciscan Capuchins and began his journey towards priesthood. On 18 December 1917, he made his perpetual vows as a Capuchin friar.

Aurelio's passion for knowledge and spiritual growth led him to Rome, Italy, where he pursued his studies in philosophy and theology. After completing his studies, he was ordained as a Catholic priest on 26 March 1921 in Rome.

Upon his return to Spain, Father Aurelio became the director of philosophy and theology at the Capuchin school in Orihuela, Alicante. He dedicated himself to teaching and guiding young seminarians, nurturing their intellectual and spiritual formation.

Tragically, during the persecutions of the Second Spanish Republic that took place in the 1930s, Father Aurelio was martyred for his unwavering faith. He was shot on 28 August 1936 in his hometown of Vinalesa, Valencia, Spain. His remains were initially buried in Foyos, Spain, but were later re-interred in Venalesa, Spain, on 17 September 1937. Finally, his final resting place was the chapel of Capuchin martyrs at the convent of Maddalena of Massamagrell.

The life and martyrdom of Father Aurelio did not go unnoticed. In recognition of his heroic virtue and sacrifice, he was venerated on 20 December 1999 by Pope John Paul II, who issued a decree of martyrdom. Father Aurelio Da Vinalesa was subsequently beatified on 11 March 2001, also by Pope John Paul II.

Today, Blessed Aurelio Da Vinalesa is remembered and celebrated on his feast day, 28 August. His inspiring life stands as a testament to his unwavering faith, dedication to teaching and guiding others, and ultimate sacrifice for the Church during a time of great turmoil and persecution.
