Blessed Augustine Gazotich

Biography

Blessed Augustine Gazotich, also known as Augustin Kažotic, Augustine Kazotic, Augustine of Lucera, and Augustine of Nocera, was born in 1262 in Trau, Dalmatia. At the age of 29, he joined the Dominican Order and dedicated his life to the service of God.

With a deep desire to spread the teachings of the Catholic faith, Augustine became a missionary to the Slavs and Hungarians. His commitment to sharing the Gospel led him to travel extensively throughout these regions, where he worked tirelessly to bring people closer to God.

In recognition of his dedication and exceptional leadership, Augustine was appointed as the Bishop of Zagreb, Croatia in 1303. During his time as bishop, he tirelessly worked to strengthen the Christian faith in the diocese and promote unity among the clergy and the faithful. His deep knowledge of theology and compassionate nature inspired many, and he became widely respected in the region.

While serving as the Bishop of Zagreb, Augustine was also appointed as the Bishop of Lucca, Italy. This dual role allowed him to continue his missionary work and spread the message of Christ to a wider audience. His efforts were not limited to the pulpit, as he possessed the gift of healing, and many sought his intercession for various ailments and afflictions.

Blessed Augustine Gazotich was known for his humility, piety, and unwavering faith. His sincere devotion to the Catholic Church and his commitment to the spiritual well-being of his flock were evident in his daily actions and interactions. He often emphasized the importance of prayer, penance, and the sacraments as means of deepening one's relationship with God.

On August 3, 1323, Blessed Augustine Gazotich passed away in Lucera, Foggia, Italy, of natural causes. His death marked the end of a life dedicated to spreading the love and mercy of Jesus Christ. His feast day is celebrated on August 3, although in some calendars it is also observed on August 8.

Blessed Augustine Gazotich's sanctity and impact on the faithful were acknowledged by the Catholic Church. He was beatified on July 17, 1700, by Pope Leo X, with the cultus confirmed by Pope Innocent XII. Although no specific representation has been attributed to him, his life serves as an example of humility, evangelization, and a deep love for God.
