Biography

Blessed Artaldo of Belley, also known as Artaldus, Artaud, Arthaud, Arthold, Artholdus, and Artoldo, was born around 1101 in the Sothonod castle in Ain, France. Little is known about his early life, but it is believed that he served briefly in the court of Amadeus III of Savoy before experiencing a deep spiritual calling to the monastic life.

In 1120, Artaldo joined the Carthusian Order at the Charterhouse of Portes in France. His commitment to the monastic life was exceptional, and he quickly rose in the ranks of the Order. In recognition of his exceptional holiness and leadership, he and six other brother Carthusians were chosen to establish a new charterhouse in Valromey, Switzerland.

In 1132, Artaldo founded the monastery of Arvières, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Under his guidance, the monastery flourished as a center of prayer, study, and devotion. Artaldo's gentle and compassionate nature endeared him to both his fellow monks and the local community.

Despite his dedication to the monastic life, Artaldo was called to serve in a different capacity. In 1153, he was appointed as the Bishop of Belley in France. Artaldo embraced his new role with enthusiasm and worked tirelessly to shepherd his flock for over 70 years. His leadership was marked by humility, wisdom, and a deep commitment to the teachings of the Church.

Blessed Artaldo of Belley became widely revered for his holiness and miraculous gifts. His reputation as a healer and spiritual guide attracted numerous pilgrims seeking his intercession. People from all walks of life sought his counsel and experienced profound spiritual transformations under his guidance.

After dedicating the majority of his life to the service of the Church and his diocese, Artaldo retired at the age of 103. He returned to his beloved monastery of Arvières, where he spent his final two years in prayerful contemplation, preparing for the ultimate union with God.

Blessed Artaldo of Belley passed away peacefully on October 6, 1206, at the monastery of Arvières, succumbing to natural causes. His holy life of selflessness, devotion, and unwavering faith continues to inspire countless individuals to deepen their spiritual journey and seek a closer relationship with God.

In recognition of his exceptional sanctity, Pope Gregory XVI beatified Blessed Artaldo of Belley in 1834, confirming his cultus. Today, his feast day is celebrated on October 6th each year, allowing the faithful to honor and seek his intercession.
