Biography

Blessed Arnaldo Pons, also known as Blessed Arnaldo de Bolea or simply Arnaldo Pons, was a Mercedarian friar who lived during the 14th and 15th centuries. Though not much is known about his early life, his extraordinary and selfless acts of charity have made him a revered figure in Catholicism.

In the year 1382, Arnaldo Pons achieved great renown for his courageous efforts in Almeria, Spain, where he ransomed 48 Christians who had been enslaved by Muslims. Fueled by a deep sense of compassion and guided by his religious devotion, Arnaldo risked his own safety in order to secure the freedom of these captives, showcasing his unwavering commitment to the principles of mercy and redemption.

Blessed Arnaldo's unwavering dedication to the plight of the oppressed continued to shine brightly when he was charged with another vital mission four years later. In 1386, he was sent to Tunis (in modern Tunisia) to ransom captive Christians who were held there. Undeterred by the dangers that awaited him, Arnaldo embarked on a perilous journey across North Africa. Throughout this arduous expedition, he encountered abuse, occasional imprisonment, and numerous obstacles, but his determination and unwavering faith never wavered. In the face of adversity, he remained steadfast in his mission and ultimately succeeded in freeing those in captivity.

Following his triumph in Tunis, Blessed Arnaldo Pons retired from his noble endeavours and decided to spend his final years in the safety and tranquility of the Mercedarian convent of Santa Maria dei Miracoli in Montflorie, Aragon, in modern-day Spain. It was within these peaceful surroundings that he devoted himself to a life of prayer, reflection, and contemplation, further strengthening his spiritual connection with God.

On a serene day, towards the end of his life, Blessed Arnaldo peacefully passed away within the walls of the Mercedarian convent where he had found solace. It is believed that he died of natural causes, having dedicated his entire life to the service of others and the betterment of humanity.

Although not much is known about his representation or specific details surrounding his beatification and veneration, the Mercedarian Order recognizes Blessed Arnaldo Pons as an example of outstanding dedication to the Christian faith. His feast day is celebrated on the 5th of August, allowing devoted adherents to commemorate his life and remarkable achievements.
