Biography

Blessed Archangela Girlani, also known as Eleanor Girlani, was born in 1460 in Trino, Italy. From a young age, she felt a strong calling to religious life and had a deep desire to become a Benedictine nun. However, when she set out for the convent, her horse inexplicably refused to move. Taking this as a sign from God, Eleanor interpreted it as a sign to change her course.

In 1478, Eleanor joined the Carmelites at Parma, Italy, and took on the religious name Archangela. She dedicated her life to the service of God and embraced the Carmelite way of life wholeheartedly. She lived a life of profound devotion, seeking a closer union with the Holy Trinity through constant prayer and contemplation.

Archangela distinguished herself not only through her unwavering faith but also through the remarkable gifts she received from God. She experienced frequent states of ecstasy, during which she was deeply immersed in spiritual contemplation. Additionally, she possessed the gift of levitation, where she was observed to rise from the ground during moments of intense prayer. Numerous witnesses attested to these extraordinary phenomena.

As Prioress of the Carmelite monasteries in both Parma and Mantua, Archangela provided strong leadership and spiritual guidance to her fellow sisters. Her humility, kindness, and unwavering commitment to the Carmelite Rule inspired many to renew their own commitment to a devout religious life.

Despite her numerous spiritual experiences, Archangela remained profoundly humble, always attributing her mystical gifts to the grace of God. She became renowned for her holiness and the miracles associated with her intercession. Countless individuals sought her prayers and witnessed miraculous healings and conversions as a result.

On January 25, 1495, Archangela peacefully passed away in Mantua, Italy, succumbing to natural causes. Her sanctity and reputation for holiness endured long after her death, as the faithful continued to invoke her intercession.

Archangela Girlani was officially beatified on October 1, 1864, by Pope Pius IX. The confirmation of her cultus recognized her as a model of virtue and an intercessor before God. Her feast day is celebrated on January 25, commemorating the day of her death. Some calendars also observe her feast on February 13, or January 29 for certain regions.

Blessed Archangela Girlani remains an inspiration to all who seek a deeper union with God and a testament to the power of faith, devotion, and the extraordinary graces that God bestows upon His chosen ones.
