Death: August 29, 1936
Blessed Aquilino Pastor Cambeos, also known as Aquilino Pastor Cambero, was a Catholic priest and martyr. He was born on 4 January 1911 in Zarza de Granadilla, Cáceres, Spain. Aquilino dedicated his life to the service of God and the Church, studying at the seminaries of Coria and Toledo and demonstrating great dedication and passion for his faith.
On 25 August 1935, Aquilino was ordained as a priest, marking the beginning of his vocation in the Diocesan Laborer Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, also known as the Hermandad de Sacerdotes Operarios Diocesanos. He had joined this religious community a year earlier, in 1934, while still studying in the seminary. The congregation focused on supporting and assisting dioceses in various pastoral works, and Aquilino embraced this mission wholeheartedly.
After his ordination, Father Aquilino Pastor Cambeos was assigned to serve as the prefect of students in Baeza, Spain. He diligently fulfilled his responsibilities, guiding and mentoring young seminarians, and nurturing their spiritual growth.
However, during the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War, Aquilino's life took a tragic turn. On 20 July 1936, he was seized by anti-Catholic forces who sought to suppress religious expression and persecute those who professed their faith. Held as a prisoner for several weeks, Aquilino endured unimaginable hardships and suffering while remaining steadfast in his commitment to Christ and the Church.
Ultimately, on 29 August 1936, Aquilino Pastor Cambeos was martyred for the sole reason of being a Catholic priest. He embraced this martyrdom, recognizing the honor and sacrifice it entailed. His courage and steadfast faith in the face of persecution are a testament to his spiritual strength and unwavering commitment to Christ.
In recognition of his martyrdom, Aquilino was venerated by Pope Francis on 29 September 2020, who declared his martyrdom through a decree. This act of recognition paved the way for his beatification, which took place on 30 October 2021, also presided over by Pope Francis. The beatification ceremony was held in the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora Santa María, Tortosa, Spain, a fitting tribute to this courageous and faithful servant of God.
Blessed Aquilino Pastor Cambeos serves as an inspiring example of dedication, faithfulness, and sacrifice for all Catholics. His life and martyrdom remind us of the courage and enduring devotion that many individuals have shown throughout history in their unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith.
