Death: September 1, 12
Blessed Apolinar Franco, also known as Apollinaris, was a devout Franciscan Friar Minor (Observants) priest who dedicated his life to spreading the teachings of Christianity. Born in 1575 in Aguilar del Campo, Palencia, Spain, he felt a calling to missionary work and embarked on a courageous journey to Japan during the 17th century, a time when Christianity was considered a capital offense in the country.
Upon his arrival in Japan, Apollinar Franco's mission to share the Word of God faced immediate obstacles. He was soon arrested and imprisoned by the authorities who sought to suppress the growing influence of Christianity. Despite the difficult circumstances, Apollinar remained steadfast in his faith and commitment to his mission.
During his more than five years on death row, Apollinar used this time to minister to his fellow prisoners and convert his jailers. Through his compassionate outreach and unwavering devotion, he touched the lives of many, inspiring them to embrace Christianity even in the face of persecution.
Apollinar Franco's unwavering conviction and determination made him an instrumental figure in the spread of Christianity in Japan. His selfless acts of love and kindness earned him deep respect among his fellow prisoners and garnered attention from those who witnessed his unwavering faith.
Tragically, Apollinar met his martyrdom on September 12, 1622, when he was burned alive at Omura, Nagasaki, Japan for his refusal to renounce his religious beliefs. His courage in the face of such a brutal death is a testament to his unwavering dedication to God and the people he served.
Blessed Apolinar Franco's feast days are celebrated on September 12 and also on September 10 as one of the 205 Martyrs of Japan. Additionally, he is also honored on May 22 as one of the Franciscan Martyrs of Japan.
In recognition of his virtuous life and courageous death, Pope Pius IX declared Apolinar Franco venerable on February 26, 1866, and beatified him on May 7, 1867. His beatification serves as a testament to his extraordinary faith and the legacy of his missionary work in Japan.
Blessed Apolinar Franco's story serves as an inspiration to all who face adversity and persecution for their beliefs. His selfless ministry, unwavering faith, and ultimate sacrifice continue to resonate, reminding us of the profound importance of religious freedom and the transformative power of the Word of God.
