Biography

Blessed Antonio Vallesio was a Mercedarian missionary known for his devoted work in Tunisia during the 13th century. Born in Liguria, Italy, little is known about his early life and upbringing. However, his strong faith and desire to spread Christianity led him to join the Mercedarian Order, a religious community dedicated to ransoming Christian captives from Muslim lands.

Antonio's missionary zeal took him to Tunisia, where he fearlessly preached the Gospel despite the challenging and often dangerous circumstances of the time. He aimed to bring hope and salvation to those who were living under Islamic rule, diligently sharing the teachings of Jesus Christ and striving to convert those who were open to his message.

However, his courageous efforts to spread Christianity did not go unnoticed by the Muslim authorities. Antonio's uncompromising faith, coupled with his unwillingness to abandon his mission, eventually led to his arrest by the Muslim authorities in Tunisia. The charges against him were based on the crime of preaching Christianity, which was strictly prohibited in the Muslim-controlled region.

Living out his mission as a Mercedarian, Antonio willingly embraced the suffering and challenges that came with his vocation. Following his arrest, he was sentenced to forced labor as punishment for his Christian beliefs. Nonetheless, his martyrdom took a tragic turn when he was simply dragged outside of the town and mercilessly stoned to death.
