Death: September 22, 1936
Blessed Antonio Sáez De Ibarra López, born as Ruperto on 25 March 1914 in Hijona, Alava, Spain, was a devoted Franciscan Friar Minor postulant. At the age of one day, he was baptized and would later take the name Antonio upon entering the novitiate on 17 January 1931. However, his novitiate was tragically interrupted by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, which saw his convent being burned.
Despite the challenging circumstances, Antonio continued to nurture his faith and deepen his theological studies. However, his declining health forced him to withdraw from college and settle at the convent of Fuenteobejuna. There, he dedicated himself to a life of prayer and service, remaining steadfast in his commitment to God even in the face of adversity.
Sadly, the violent turmoil of the Spanish Civil War reached the peaceful confines of Fuenteobejuna. On 22 September 1936, Antonio, along with several other Friars Minor of Granada, fell victim to religious persecution and was martyred for his unwavering faith. His courageous witness in the face of persecution stands as a testament to his devotion to Christ and the Gospel.
Recognizing his heroic virtues and sacrifice, Pope Benedict XVI issued a decree of martyrdom on 28 April 2006, venerating Antonio Sáez De Ibarra López as a blessed. He was beatified by the same pope on 28 October 2007, affirming his sanctity and placing him among the ranks of the blessed.
Throughout his life, Blessed Antonio Sáez De Ibarra López exemplified the spirit of humility, selflessness, and unwavering faithfulness to God and the Franciscan charism. As a Franciscan Friar Minor, he embraced the ideals of his order, living a life of poverty, simplicity, and love for all of God's creation. Today, he is revered as a holy martyr and an inspiration to all who seek to follow Christ faithfully, particularly in times of trial and persecution.
