Blessed Antonio Martínez García, also known as Antonio García, was born on 29 January 1892 in Almería, Spain. He was a faithful servant of God and dedicated his life to the priesthood in the diocese of Almería. During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, when religious persecution was rampant, Blessed Antonio Martínez García remained steadfast in his faith. He fearlessly defended the Catholic Church and its teachings, even in the face of great danger.
Sadly, on 16 September 1936, Blessed Antonio became a victim of the violent persecution against Catholics during the civil war. He was martyred in Puente del Río Andarax, Viator, Almería, Spain, where he was captured and eventually executed for his unwavering dedication to the Catholic faith.
In recognition of his steadfast faith and martyrdom, Blessed Antonio Martínez García was venerated on 14 June 2016 by Pope Francis, who issued a decree of martyrdom. On 25 March 2017, Pope Francis beatified him, acknowledging his heroic virtue and martyrdom. The beatification ceremony took place in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce, Almería, Spain, and was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.
