Biography

Blessed Antonio Jes√∫s Díaz Ramos, also known as Blessed Antonio Jes√∫s, was born on 31 December 1896 in Bollullos del Condado, Huelva, Spain. He was ordained a priest of the archdiocese of Sevilla on 18 December 1920, and soon after, he began his pastoral ministry serving the faithful of Sevilla.

In 1931, Father Antonio Jes√∫s Díaz Ramos was appointed as the parish administrator in Cazalla de la Sierra, located in the province of Sevilla. He was loved by his parishioners for his dedication to his pastoral duties and his commitment to spreading the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Tragically, on the night of 18 July 1936, the Spanish Civil War broke out, and the wave of violence and persecution against Catholics commenced. Father Antonio Jes√∫s, along with many other priests and religious, became a target of these anti-Catholic sentiments.

Only a few weeks into the conflict, Father Antonio Jes√∫s Díaz Ramos was imprisoned in Cazalla de la Sierra. Despite enduring harsh conditions and facing torment, he remained steadfast in his faith and continued to provide spiritual support to his fellow prisoners.

Sadly, his time in captivity was cut short, and on 5 August 1936, less than three weeks after his arrest, Father Antonio Jes√∫s Díaz Ramos was martyred for his unwavering commitment to his faith. His life was tragically taken within the walls of the prison in Cazalla de la Sierra, Sevilla.

Recognizing his heroic witness to the Catholic faith, Pope Francis declared Father Antonio Jes√∫s Díaz Ramos venerable on 22 June 2023, signifying that he lived a life of heroic virtue. It is hoped that in due course, he will also be beatified.

Blessed Antonio Jes√∫s Díaz Ramos is commemorated on 5 August each year as a reminder of his sacrifice and dedication to the Church. His story serves as an inspiration for all those who face persecution for their religious beliefs.
