Biography

Blessed Antonio Gilmonforte, also known as Antonio Gil Monforte, was a dedicated member of the De La Salle Brothers, who ultimately met his martyrdom during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 9 February 1903 in the town of Mosquerela, Teruel, Spain.

Antonio Gilmonforte grew up in a devout Catholic family and displayed a deep faith from a young age. Inspired by the teachings of St. John Baptist de La Salle, he entered the De La Salle Brothers, a religious congregation founded by St. La Salle that is dedicated to providing education for the poor.

As a De La Salle Brother, Antonio Gilmonforte committed himself wholeheartedly to his vocation as an educator. He embraced the values of his order, which emphasizes the importance of providing quality education to those who are marginalized and in need. In his role as a teacher, he sought to instill knowledge, values, and character in his students, helping them to grow spiritually, intellectually, and socially.

Tragically, during the height of the Spanish Civil War, Antonio Gilmonforte became a victim of religious persecution. Pope Benedict XVI, on 28 June 2012, declared his martyrdom with a decree, acknowledging the circumstances of his death as a result of hatred towards his faith. Brother Antonio Gilmonforte was formally beatified by Pope Francis on 13 October 2013.
