Biography

Blessed Antonio Caixal, also known as Fray Antonio Caixal, was a well-educated Mercedarian friar who dedicated his life to the service of God and the rescue of Christians captured as slaves in Muslim countries. Born in an unknown date and location, his exact early life details are unfortunately unavailable.

In 1405, Fray Antonio Caixal was chosen as the 15th Master-General of the Mercedarians, a religious order focused on the redemption of Christian captives. During his tenure, he tirelessly worked to strengthen the spiritual life of the Mercedarians and improve their financial resources to carry out their mission of ransoming Christians from enslavement. His dedication and leadership skills allowed the order to rescue and support numerous individuals.

Beyond his efforts within the Mercedarian order, Fray Antonio Caixal also served as a diplomat for the King of Aragon. His diplomatic skills were put to use when he attended the Council of Perpignan in France, where he engaged in discussions and negotiations on behalf of his king. Later on, he was chosen to represent the Mercedarians at the Council of Constance in Switzerland, which aimed to address the challenges posed by the Western Schism, a period of division within the Catholic Church.

Blessed Antonio Caixal strongly believed in the unity of the Church and worked diligently to overcome the divisions caused by the Western Schism. His involvement in the Council of Constance allowed him to contribute to the efforts of reunification and reestablishment of harmony within the Church.

Due to his exceptional qualities and commitment to the Church, Fray Antonio Caixal was chosen to be the bishop of Lyons, France. However, out of his humility and sense of unworthiness, he declined the appointment.

On May 25, 1417, Blessed Antonio Caixal passed away in Constance, Switzerland, due to natural causes. His selfless dedication, spiritual leadership, and diplomatic efforts left a lasting impact on the Mercedarians and the Church as a whole.
