Blessed Antonio Artero Moreno was a seminarian of the diocese of Córdoba, Spain, who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on March 22, 1912, in Pozoblanco, Córdoba, to a devout Catholic family.
From a young age, Antonio showed a deep piety and a strong inclination towards the priesthood. In pursuit of his vocation, he joined the seminary in Córdoba, where he received an excellent education and formation in theology and philosophy. Antonio's spirituality was marked by a profound devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, particularly to Our Lady of Sorrows. He was known for leading others in the recitation of the Rosary and encouraging a life of prayer and devotion.
In July 1936, the Spanish Civil War broke out, leading to a wave of anti-Catholic violence across the country. Seminaries and religious houses were seized, and many priests and religious were targeted for their faith. Antonio, along with several other seminarians, was forced to leave the seminary due to the escalating violence.
Despite the danger, Antonio chose to remain in Córdoba and continue his missionary activities, providing spiritual support to those in need. He traveled from village to village, offering consolation, prayer, and sacraments to the persecuted faithful. His courageous witness to the Gospel and unwavering devotion to his faith inspired many during those difficult times.
However, Antonio's missionary work eventually caught the attention of the authorities, and he was arrested on September 5, 1936. Along with three other companions, he was taken to Valencia, where they were imprisoned and brutally interrogated. Throughout his imprisonment, Antonio remained steadfast in his faith and continued to minister to his fellow prisoners, offering them hope and encouragement in the face of persecution.
On September 15, 1936, Antonio Artero Moreno and his companions were executed for their unwavering defense of the Catholic faith. Their martyrdom is seen as a testament to their commitment to Christ and their steadfast refusal to renounce their beliefs.
Years later, on November 23, 2020, Pope Francis recognized the martyrdom of Antonio Artero Moreno, declaring him "Blessed." His beatification ceremony took place on October 16, 2021, at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain.
