Biography

Blessed Antonia Maria Verna, born on 12 June 1773 in Pasquaro di Rivarolo Canavese, Turin, Italy, was a remarkable woman who felt a strong calling to religious life from an early age. As a teenager, she began caring for and catechising children in her village, demonstrating her passion for education and imparting the teachings of the Catholic faith.

Antonia's dedication to her vocation led her to enroll at the Institute in San Giorgio Canavese, where she balanced her studies with teaching responsibilities, even at such a young age. The Institute provided her with a solid foundation in religious education and prepared her for her future endeavors.

In 1806, Antonia, alongside several like-minded individuals, established a group that would eventually evolve into the Institute of the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception of Ivrea. This religious order was committed to the noble goals of teaching and catechising children, as well as providing compassionate care for the sick. With the formation of the Institute, Antonia's lifelong mission began to take shape.

Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, Antonia's determination and unwavering faith allowed the Institute to flourish. In 1819, the sisters opened their first home, providing a sanctuary for those in need. It was through her tireless efforts that the Institute gained the attention and recognition of King Charles Felix, who granted secular approval on 7 March 1828. Antonia's bishop also officially endorsed the Institute on 10 June of the same year.

Antonia dedicated the remainder of her life to leading, promoting, and expanding the Institute. Her selfless devotion to its mission took a toll on her health, as she pushed herself beyond her limits. Despite her deteriorating condition, Antonia remained steadfast in her commitment to serving God and the community.

Tragically, Antonia Maria Verna passed away on 25 December 1838, succumbing to natural causes in her hometown of Pasquaro di Rivarolo Canavese. She was laid to rest in the basement of her parish church, a place that memorialized her as a beacon of faith and service. Her extraordinary virtues and exemplary life made her a revered figure among the Catholic faithful.

On 19 December 2009, Pope Benedict XVI recognized Antonia's virtuous life, declaring her venerable. Later, on 2 October 2011, she was beatified by the same pontiff, further confirming her sanctity. Today, Blessed Antonia Maria Verna stands as an inspirational model of selflessness, devotion, and compassion, serving as a guiding light for all who seek spiritual growth and service to others.
