Biography

Blessed Antoni Perich Comas, also known as Blessed Antoni Comas i Argemir, was a devoted member of the Claretians who dedicated his life to serving God. He was born on June 21, 1911, in the village of San Jordi des Valls, Girona, Spain. From an early age, Antoni exhibited a deep faith and a strong sense of vocation.

Inspired by the Claretian charism, Antoni joined the religious congregation and professed his vows on August 15, 1928. He wholeheartedly embraced the missionary spirit of the Claretians and sought to bring the love of Christ to those in need. Antoni's dedication to his religious life and his unwavering commitment to the Gospel teachings made him an exemplary member of the community.

Tragically, the Spanish Civil War erupted, challenging the peaceful religious life of Antoni and countless others. During this turbulent period, Antoni remained faithful to his religious calling and continued to minister to the spiritual needs of the people. However, his selfless service and commitment to his faith came at a great cost.

On September 16, 1936, in the town of Castellbelli el Vilar, Barcelona, Antoni Perich Comas was martyred for his unwavering faith and refusal to renounce his religious beliefs. His courageous witness in the face of persecution and his sacrifice for the sake of the Gospel paved the way for his eventual recognition as a martyr for the Catholic faith.

Recognizing his heroic virtue and martyrdom, Pope Francis declared the martyrdom of Blessed Antoni Perich Comas on December 21, 2016. The subsequent beatification ceremony took place on October 21, 2017, at the renowned Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. Archbishop Angelo Amato presided over this momentous occasion, as the Church celebrated the life and witness of this young martyr.

Blessed Antoni Perich Comas is honored on two feast days. The first is September 16, the anniversary of his martyrdom, which serves as a reminder of his heroic sacrifice and unwavering faith. Additionally, he is remembered on February 1, alongside the other 109 Spanish Claretian martyrs who also laid down their lives for their faith during the Spanish Civil War.

Today, the life and martyrdom of Blessed Antoni Perich Comas continue to inspire and challenge believers around the world. His unwavering faith in the face of adversity serves as a reminder to stand firm in one's beliefs, even in the most challenging circumstances. As a member of the Claretians, Antoni embodied the mission of his religious congregation - to bring the love of Christ to all corners of the world.
