Blessed Antoni Jaume Secases, also known as Brother Jaume Berti, was a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and a martyr of the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 19th November 1905 in AlÖs, a village in the province of Lleida, Spain. His dedication to his faith and his desire to serve others led him to join the religious order of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, also known as the De La Salle Brothers.
Antoni Jaume Secases lived a life committed to his Christian principles and to the education of young people. He worked tirelessly as a teacher, guided by the mission of the De La Salle Brothers to provide a quality education to those in need, particularly the poor and marginalized. His selfless devotion to his students earned him the respect and admiration of both his peers and those under his care.
Unfortunately, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 plunged the country into a period of intense political and social unrest. Amidst the chaos and violence, religious persecution became prevalent, with many Catholic priests, religious, and laity falling victim to the hostilities.
Brother Jaume Berti was arrested and imprisoned due to his faith. Despite the oppressive conditions of his confinement, he remained steadfast in his commitment to his beliefs. He offered comfort and solace to his fellow prisoners, sharing his faith and offering support during their shared ordeal.
Tragically, on 26th July 1936, Brother Jaume Berti was martyred in Manresa, a city in the province of Barcelona. His courageous and unwavering faith led him to lay down his life for his beliefs, becoming a testament to the Christian virtues of love, compassion, and sacrifice.
Recognizing his bravery and commitment to his faith, Pope John Paul II declared Brother Jaume Berti venerable on 22nd June 2004 with a decree of martyrdom. His beatification ceremony took place on 28th October 2007, presided over by Pope Benedict XVI, officially conferring upon him the title of "Blessed."
