Biography

Blessed Antoni Casany Villarrasa, also known as Antoni Casañas Villarrasa, was a remarkable Catholic figure who dedicated his life to his faith as a member of the Claretians. Born on 4 November 1895 in Calldetenes, Barcelona, Spain, he grew up in a devout family that nurtured his strong religious convictions from an early age.

In his youth, Antoni felt a calling to serve God and joined the Congregation of the Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, commonly known as the Claretians, a religious order founded by St. Anthony Mary Claret. Antoni professed his vows on 15 August 1920, committing himself to a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience in service to God and his fellow human beings.

During the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, which began in 1936, religious persecution was rampant, and many faithful individuals faced immense challenges and danger. Tragically, Blessed Antoni Casany Villarrasa became one of the victims of this persecution. On 11 August 1936, he was brutally martyred, being shot to death in Mas Toni, Sant Pere dels Arquells, Lleida, Spain. His death was a testament to his unwavering dedication to his faith, even amidst great adversity.

Blessed Antoni Casany Villarrasa, together with 108 other Spanish Claretian Martyrs, is celebrated on 1 February as a collective feast day honoring their sacrifice and witness to the Catholic faith. Furthermore, his individual feast day is recognized on 11 August. These commemorations serve as reminders of the courage and devotion exhibited by Antoni and his companions during this challenging period in Spain's history.

Throughout the years, the faithful continued to venerate Blessed Antoni Casany Villarrasa for his martyrdom and the holiness of his life. Finally, on 21 December 2016, Pope Francis officially recognized his martyrdom with a decree. This act of recognition paved the way for his beatification, which took place on 21 October 2017, at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The ceremony was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato, representing Pope Francis, and served as a moment of great joy and celebration for the Catholic community.
