Blessed Antolín Astorga Díez, also known as Blessed Antolín, was an Augustinian priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 16th February 1906 in Aguilar de Campóo, Palencia, Spain. Antolín dedicated his life to God and eventually joined the Order of Saint Augustine, where he deepened his spiritual journey and nurtured his vocation to the priesthood.
Antolín's passion for the faith led him to study theology and philosophy, equipping him with a solid foundation of knowledge and spiritual wisdom. He was known for his exceptional dedication to the sacraments, particularly the Holy Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, which he administered with great care and compassion. Antolín became a beloved figure in the communities he served, guiding the faithful and offering them spiritual guidance and support.
However, the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War cast a dark shadow over Antolín's life. As a result of his unwavering commitment to Christ and his refusal to renounce his faith, he became a target of persecution by anti-Catholic factions. Despite the imminent danger, Antolín remained steadfast in his beliefs, offering solace and hope to his fellow persecuted brothers and sisters.
Tragically, on 28th July 1936, Antolín Astorga Díez was martyred for his faith in Belinchón, Cuenca, Spain. His unwavering devotion to God and his refusal to abandon his religious duties, even in the face of persecution and violence, inspired countless others and earned him the title of martyr.
Recognizing his exemplary life and death, Pope Benedict XVI declared Antolín Astorga Díez Venerable on 1st June 2007, acknowledging his heroic virtues. Later, on 28th October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, bestowing upon him the title of Blessed Antolín, marking his significance as an inspirational figure for Catholics around the world.
