Biography

Blessed Antero Mateo García, born on March 4, 1875, in Valdevimbre, León, Spain, was a devout layman in the archdiocese of Barcelona. He is most notably recognized for his unwavering dedication to his faith, his commitment to his family, and his selfless service to the poor and sick.

In 1902, Antero married Trabadelo Malagon, and together they had eight children. This blessed union was marked by a deep love and shared devotion to their Catholic faith. Inspired by their commitment, two of their children eventually entered religious orders.

Antero began his professional career in 1916 when he joined Northern Railways in Barcelona. While he diligently fulfilled his responsibilities in the secular world, he always found time to nourish his spiritual life and actively participate in the Lay Dominicans. Antero and his wife were dedicated members of this Dominican lay group, which aimed to live out their faith within their daily lives.

Motivated by their love for God and their fellow brothers and sisters, Antero and his wife extended their charitable efforts by working with the poor and sick in Barcelona. Their compassionate outreach provided comfort and support to those in need, offering a glimpse of God's love in action.

An ardent pilgrim, Antero also journeyed to the renowned pilgrimage site of Lourdes in France. This holy experience further deepened his devotion and strengthened his faith. The spiritual nourishment he received there undoubtedly equipped him for the challenges he would later face.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, Antero Mateo García and many other faithful Catholics became victims of religious persecution. On August 8, 1936, under the Dragón bridge in Sant Andreu de Palomar, Barcelona, Antero was martyred for his steadfast faith. Despite the immense suffering he endured, his faith never wavered. His final act of martyrdom stood as a testament to his unwavering commitment to Christ and his Church.

Recognizing the extraordinary virtue and sacrifice demonstrated by Antero Mateo García, Pope Benedict XVI decreed his martyrdom on December 19, 2005. Later, on October 28, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, bestowing upon him the title of "Blessed."

Blessed Antero Mateo García serves as an inspiration to all who encounter his story. His dedication to family, his compassionate service to the poor and sick, and his courageous witness to his faith in the face of persecution exemplify the true essence of a devout Catholic layperson. He reminds us of the profound impact individuals can have when they allow their faith to permeate every aspect of their lives. May we draw strength from his example and strive to follow in his footsteps as we journey towards holiness.
