Biography

Blessed Anselm, also known as Anselm of Steingaden, was born in the 12th century in Germany. Little is known about his early life, but it is believed that he had a military background and served as a soldier before entering the religious life.

He became a spiritual student of Blessed Odino of Rot, a renowned Premonstratensian monk known for his holiness and wisdom. Inspired by his mentor's example, Anselm decided to join the Premonstratensian Order, a reformed branch of the Canons Regular founded by Saint Norbert of Xanten.

Anselm became a canon at the monastery of M√∂nchsrot in Rot an der Rot near Memmingen, located in Oberschwaben, Baden-Württemberg, in modern-day Germany. He dedicated himself to a life of prayer, study, and service, striving to live in accordance with the Premonstratensian Rule, which emphasizes community life, liturgical prayer, and apostolic work.

Due to his exceptional piety and knowledge, Anselm was chosen to be the founding abbot of a new Premonstratensian monastery in Steingaden, situated in the region of Weilheim-Schongau, Bavaria. This monastery, established in 1147, quickly became known as a center for learning, attracting scholars and fostering spiritual growth among its monks. Anselm's leadership ensured that the monks adhered strictly to the Premonstratensian Rule, fostering a vibrant community of faith.

Blessed Anselm was deeply committed to the spiritual development of his fellow monks. He encouraged them to live lives of holiness and to deepen their understanding of the Gospel message. Through his teaching and example, he fostered an environment of piety, humility, and dedication to God.

During his time as abbot, Blessed Anselm's reputation as a holy and wise man spread beyond the walls of the monastery. Many sought his counsel and guidance, considering him a living saint. His humility and simplicity won the hearts of all who encountered him, attracting people from far and wide.

Blessed Anselm of Rot An der Rot passed away on 11 February 1162 in Steingaden, Bavaria, Germany. His death was mourned by the entire region, and he was remembered as a man of deep faith and exemplary virtue. Although not officially canonized, his sanctity and the impact he had on the religious life of his time contributed to his popular recognition as "Blessed," a title of honor given to those considered to be in heaven.

His feast day is celebrated by the Premonstratensian Order on 11 February, a day dedicated to honoring his memory and seeking his intercession.
