Biography

Blessed Anna of the Angels Monteagudo, also known as Ana de los Angeles Monteagudo, was born on 26 July 1602 in Arequipa, Peru as Anna Monteagudo Ponce de Leon. She came from a devout Catholic family and received a solid education at a convent, which laid the foundation for her future religious life.

Despite the objections of her family, Anna felt a strong calling to dedicate her life to God and joined the Dominican Order as a nun in 1618. She embraced the religious life wholeheartedly and wore the veil with unwavering commitment for an astounding 68 years.

Anna's deep spirituality and dedication to her vocation were recognized by the Dominican community, and she was entrusted with the role of a novice mistress for many years. Her leadership and guidance assisted numerous young women in their journey towards religious life.

Anna's exemplary life of holiness led to her election as the prioress of the monastery of San Caterina da Siena in Arequipa. In this position, she continued to inspire her fellow sisters with her humility, love for God, and devotion to the Dominican charism. Under her leadership, the monastery flourished spiritually and became a beacon of light for the local community.

Blessed Anna of the Angels Monteagudo's reputation for sanctity and her remarkable dedication to her religious duties and community left a lasting impact on those around her. Her selfless service and unwavering faith provided a beautiful example for her sisters and all who encountered her.

On 10 January 1686, Blessed Anna of the Angels Monteagudo peacefully passed away in Arequipa, Peru, succumbing to natural causes. She was interred at the monastery of Saint Catherine of Siena in Arequipa, the same place where she spent much of her religious life devoted to prayer and service.

Recognizing her exemplary life, Pope Paul VI declared her venerable on 23 May 1975. Later, on 2 February 1985, Pope John Paul II beatified her during a special ceremony held in Arequipa, Peru, further acknowledging her sanctity and the impact she had on the Church and the faithful.

Blessed Anna of the Angels Monteagudo continues to be venerated for her life of holiness, commitment to her religious calling, and her unwavering faith. Her legacy serves as an inspiration for all who seek to deepen their relationship with God and live out their vocations with love and dedication.
