Biography

Blessed Angelus of Furci, also known as Angelus of Furci, was born in 1246 in the small town of Furci, located in the Abruzzi region of Italy. His parents, who had longed for a child, were blessed with his birth after fervently praying for the intercession of the Archangel Michael during a pilgrimage.

Angelus received an excellent education under the guidance of his uncle, who was the abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Cornaclano at Furci. His uncle recognized Angelus' intelligence, piety, and devotion to learning, and ensured that he received a thorough education.

In 1266, at the age of twenty, Angelus entered the Augustinian Hermit Order in Vasto, Italy, where he began his journey towards priesthood. He was ordained as a priest and later pursued further studies in theology at the prestigious Sorbonne in Paris, France. During his five-year stay in Paris, Angelus deepened his knowledge and understanding of theology.

After completing his studies, he returned to Italy and took up a teaching position at the Augustinian school in Naples. Angelus quickly gained a reputation as a renowned theologian and preacher, renowned for his vast learning and profound teachings. His captivating sermons attracted large crowds, who were captivated by his wisdom and spirituality.

Recognizing his exceptional qualities, Angelus was appointed as the Provincial Superior of the Augustinians in 1287. In this role, he provided exemplary leadership and guidance to the members of his order, nurturing their spiritual growth and ensuring the proper observance of religious practices.

Despite his many accomplishments, Angelus humbly declined offers to become the bishop of Acerra and Melfi in Italy. He believed that his true calling lay in the scholarly pursuit of theology and the direct service to his order and the people.

Blessed Angelus of Furci passed away on February 6, 1327, at the Augustinian convent in Naples. He died of natural causes, having lived a life dedicated to holiness and education. His remains were re-interred in his hometown of Furci in August 1808.

Recognized for his sanctity, Blessed Angelus of Furci was beatified on December 20, 1888, by Pope Leo XIII. His cult was officially confirmed, and his memory is celebrated on February 6. Some calendars also remember him on September 13.
