Biography

Blessed Angelo Tancredi, also known as Angelo of Rieti or Angelus, was born in the late 12th century in Rieti, Italy. Coming from a noble family, he embarked on a military career and became a knight. In the year 1223, Angelo found himself in the service of Cardinal Leone Brancaleone in Rome, Italy.

During his time in Rome, fate led Angelo to encounter one of the most revered figures in Catholic history, Saint Francis of Assisi. Moved by the teachings and spirituality of Francis, Angelo made a momentous decision to renounce his military life and became one of the earliest spiritual disciples of Francis. In fact, he holds the distinction of being the first knight to join the newly established Order of the Friars Minor, commonly known as the Franciscans.

Angelo's dedication and fervor were showcased in his active involvement in the early formation of the Franciscan order. As one of the twelve original Franciscan friars, he played a crucial role in shaping the foundations and principles of the nascent community. Angelo's contributions were not limited to his participation in the order; he even played a significant role in documenting the early days of the Franciscans. Alongside his peers, Angelo co-authored the famous "Legend of the Three Companions," a crucial historical account of the life of Saint Francis and the early years of the Franciscan movement.

Another remarkable event highlighting Angelo's deep bond with Saint Francis was his role as a caregiver during the saint's final illness. Angelo lovingly nursed Francis, offering comfort and solace in his final days. In a poignant moment, he was said to be singing the Canticle of the Sun, a beautiful hymn composed by Saint Francis, when Francis took his last breath.

After a life dedicated to the service of God and the Franciscan order, Blessed Angelo Tancredi passed away in 1258 from natural causes. His earthly remains found their final resting place near the tomb of Saint Francis of Assisi in the crypt of the Basilica in Assisi, Italy. This location holds significant significance, not only as an homage to his spiritual mentor but also as a testament to Angelo's unwavering commitment to the Franciscan way of life.
