Biography

Blessed Angelo of Massaccio, also known as Angelo of Cupramontana or Angelo of Serra, was a dedicated Camaldolese monk who resided at the Santa Maria della Serra monastery near Cupramontana, Italy. Born in the late 14th century in Massaccio (modern-day Cupramontana), Italy, he was ordained as a priest.

Angelo became known for his remarkable devotion to his religious duties and his dedication to the Order of Saint Benedict. His commitment led him to be appointed as the Prior of his monastery, where he served as an exemplary spiritual leader to his fellow monks.

Tragically, Angelo's life was cut short in the mid-15th century when he faced persecution at the hands of Berlotani heretic woodcutters. These individuals, who deviated from traditional Catholic teachings, disregarded the sanctity of the Sabbath. Out of deep concern for their spiritual well-being, Angelo fearlessly chastised them for their disregard of religious observances.

However, his admonishment did not resonate positively with the heretics, and in a brutal act of violence, Angelo was ultimately martyred. It is believed that he was struck with an axe, which resulted in his untimely death. This martyrdom serves as a testament to his unyielding commitment to upholding the values and teachings of the Catholic Church.

Soon after his death, the devout faithful recognized Angelo's sanctity and began to venerate him as a blessed soul. By the year 1492, his mortal remains were interred beneath the altar in the church at Santa Maria della Serra, which is now recognized as the Church of Sant Angelo.

The official recognition of Blessed Angelo of Massaccio's holiness came on September 27, 1842 when he was beatified by Pope Gregory XVI. This act confirmed his cultus, enduring his memory for generations to come. On May 8th each year, the Catholic Church commemorates the feast day of Blessed Angelo as a means to celebrate and seek inspiration from his exemplary life and martyrdom.

Blessed Angelo of Massaccio's unwavering dedication to his vocation, his willingness to stand up for his faith, and his ultimate sacrifice remain an inspiration to Catholics worldwide. His life story serves as a reminder of the enduring courage and resilience of the saints, whose faith and commitment continue to inspire and guide believers throughout the ages.
