Biography

Blessed Andrés Avelino Gutiérrez Moral, a Vincentian priest, was born on November 11, 1886, in Salazar de Amaya, Burgos, Spain. He devoted his life to the service of God and the Church, ultimately becoming a martyr during the Spanish Civil War.

Andrés Avelino Gutiérrez Moral lived in a turbulent period in Spanish history, marked by social and political unrest. However, he remained steadfast in his commitment to his faith and his calling as a priest. He joined the Congregation of the Mission, also known as the Vincentians, and was ordained to the priesthood.

As a Vincentian, Father Gutiérrez Moral embraced the mission of serving the poor and marginalized. He dedicated himself to helping those most in need, offering them spiritual guidance, and providing practical assistance. His compassion and selflessness endeared him to the communities he served.

Unfortunately, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 brought a wave of violence and persecution against Catholics. Andrés Avelino Gutiérrez Moral became a target of this aggression due to his religious affiliation. On August 3, 1936, he was martyred in Gijón, Asturias, Spain, losing his life for his unwavering commitment to Christ and his unwavering dedication to his vocation.

The feast days of Blessed Andrés Avelino Gutiérrez Moral are celebrated on August 3rd and November 6th, as part of the Vincentian Martyrs. These days are dedicated to honoring the memory of the Vincentian priests who suffered martyrdom during the Spanish Civil War.

In recognition of his heroic sacrifice, Father Gutiérrez Moral was venerated by Pope Francis on July 5, 2013, with the decree of martyrdom. Just a few months later, on October 13, 2013, Pope Francis beatified Andrés Avelino Gutiérrez Moral during a special ceremony, officially declaring him Blessed.
