Biography

Blessed Andrew Dotti, also known as Andrea Dotti, was born in 1256 in Borgo San Sepolcro, Tuscany, Italy, into a noble family. He was the brother of Count Dotto Dotti and grew up immersed in the world of courtiers and nobility. However, despite his privileged upbringing, Andrew felt a strong calling to religious life from an early age.

Andrew's path took an unexpected turn when he became a career soldier, serving in the prestigious army of Philippe the Fair. Rising through the ranks, he eventually achieved the position of captain of archers. However, even in the midst of his military career, his heart yearned for a deeper spiritual path.

In 1278, everything changed for Andrew when he attended a sermon by Saint Philip Benizi, a leading figure in the newly established Servite Order. Deeply moved by Saint Philip's words and inspired by his commitment to serving God, Andrew made the life-altering decision to join the Servite Order. He was personally received into the Order by Saint Philip himself, further enriching the significance of this event.

After his initiation, Andrew pursued his vocation steadfastly. He was ordained a priest and dedicated himself to various roles within the Servite Order, holding several offices along the way. Andrew's exceptional preaching abilities and his reputation as a sought-after confessor quickly garnered attention and admiration from his contemporaries.

Notably, Andrew was renowned for his personal penances, practicing rigorous acts of self-denial and offering his sufferings for the salvation of others. His commitment to a life of sacrifice and virtuous living exemplified his deep devotion to God.

Moreover, Andrew was blessed with a remarkable spiritual sensitivity, often experiencing visions and performing miracles. These extraordinary occurrences not only deepened his faith but also inspired many others who witnessed or heard of his divine encounters.

As Andrew advanced in years, he chose to retire to Montevecchio, desiring to spend his final days in prayer and solitude. In this secluded sanctuary, he dedicated himself wholly to a life of contemplation and reflection, seeking an even closer union with God.

On August 31, 1315, Blessed Andrew Dotti passed away peacefully at Montevecchio, Italy, succumbing to natural causes. He was interred in his hometown of Borgo San Sepolcro, Tuscany, Italy, where his mortal remains find their resting place.

Blessed Andrew Dotti's profound spirituality, exemplary life of penance, and unwavering dedication to the Servite Order left an enduring impact on the faithful. Recognizing his sanctity, Pope Pius VII beatified him on November 29, 1806, confirming the cultus of this revered servant of God.

Today, Blessed Andrew Dotti's feast day is celebrated on August 31 by the Servites, although some calendars commemorate him on September 3. As a model of devout piety and selfless service, his life continues to inspire countless individuals seeking a closer relationship with God.
