Biography

Blessed Andrew Abellon, also known as André, was born in 1375 in Saint Maximin, Provence, France. In his youth, he had the privilege of listening to the captivating preaching of Saint Vincent Ferrer, which had a profound impact on his spiritual journey.

Inspired by his encounter with Saint Vincent Ferrer, Andrew decided to dedicate his life to God and joined the Dominican Order at Saint Maximin Monastery. After his formation in the Dominican way of life, he was ordained a priest and became a faithful servant of the Church.

As a Dominican friar, Andrew served as the Prior of Saint Mary Magdalen Monastery in Provence. This monastery held great significance as it was believed to be one of the places where Saint Mary Magdalen sought refuge after the Crucifixion. The monastery also claimed to possess relics of the renowned biblical figure. Blessed Andrew played a vital role in preserving and promoting the rich spiritual heritage of this pilgrimage site.

Known for his artistic talents, Blessed Andrew Abellon gained recognition as a skilled manuscript illuminator. His artistic works were highly esteemed during his time, contributing to the beauty and spiritual significance of religious texts.

In addition to his dedication to the arts, Blessed Andrew was a zealous missionary and engaged in preaching home missions. He wholeheartedly supported the efforts of other missionaries, recognizing the importance of spreading the message of Christ to all corners of the world.

Blessed Andrew Abellon's life of faith, devotion, and commitment to serve God and His Church touched the lives of many. He demonstrated exemplary compassion, leading him to support the less fortunate, provide guidance to the spiritually lost, and offer solace to the afflicted.

On May 15, 1450, Blessed Andrew Abellon passed away in Aix-en-Provence, France, peacefully succumbing to natural causes. He was laid to rest in the Church of the Magdalen, and soon his tomb became renowned for its association with miraculous cures.

Recognizing his virtuous life and the impact he had on the faithful, Pope Leo XIII beatified Blessed Andrew Abellon in 1902, confirming the cultus (public veneration) that had developed around him throughout the years. Today, the faithful honor and seek his intercession on his feast day, May 15th, as they continue to be inspired by his unwavering commitment to God and his loving service to all.
