Biography

Blessed Andreu Prats Barrufet was a revered priest in the archdiocese of Tarragona, Spain. He was born on 7 August 1886 in La Selva del Camp, a town located in the province of Tarragona. From an early age, Andreu displayed a strong devotion to God and a desire to serve the Catholic Church.

After receiving his religious education, Andreu was ordained a priest in the archdiocese of Tarragona. He dedicated his life to his ministry, faithfully serving the communities under his care. As a priest, Andreu provided spiritual guidance and support to countless individuals, helping them nourish their relationship with God.

Sadly, Blessed Andreu Prats Barrufet would become a martyr during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War. The war, which ravaged Spain from 1936 to 1939, pitted various factions against each other and resulted in immense suffering for the people of the country.

On 13 August 1936, in the city of Reus, Tarragona, Andreu Prats Barrufet was brutally executed for his unwavering faith and refusal to renounce his principles. Even in the face of persecution and imminent danger, he courageously stood by his beliefs, ultimately sacrificing his life for his devotion to Christ.

Recognizing his heroic martyrdom, Pope Benedict XVI venerated Andreu Prats on 28 June 2012, issuing a decree affirming his martyrdom. The beatification ceremony, which marks a significant step towards sainthood, took place on 13 October 2013. Pope Francis presided over the beatification ceremony in Tarragona, Spain, honoring Andreu Prats Barrufet's exemplary life and martyrdom.

Blessed Andreu Prats Barrufet's feast day is celebrated on 13 August each year. On this day, Catholics around the world commemorate his selfless sacrifice and honor his memory.
