Biography

Blessed Andrea Calle González, also known as Blessed Andrea of Madrid, was a devout Catholic nun who lived during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War. She was born on 26 February 1902 in Plasencia, Cáceres, Spain. From an early age, Andrea felt a deep calling to serve the Lord and her fellow human beings, which ultimately led her to join the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul.

Andrea dedicated her life to the service of God, taking her religious vows and committing herself to a life of prayer, compassion, and helping those in need. As a member of the Daughters of Charity, she embraced the charism of her order, which focused on serving the poor and marginalized. Her dedication to her faith and selfless service made her a beloved member of her community and a shining example of charity and piety.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution was rampant, and many Catholic clergy, religious, and laity became victims of violence and martyrdom. Sister Andrea found herself caught in the midst of this turmoil. On 3 September 1936, in the neighborhood of Vallecas in Madrid, she was martyred for her unwavering faith and refusal to renounce her Catholic beliefs.

Blessed Andrea's courageous witness to her faith in the face of persecution earned her recognition as a martyr for her religious convictions. Her steadfastness even in the face of death became an inspiration to Catholics around the world.

It was not until many years later, on 27 October 2013, that Pope Benedict XVI beatified Andrea Calle González, officially recognizing her as Blessed Andrea. This beatification affirmed her martyrdom and acknowledged her holiness and sacrificial life. Her beatification serves as a reminder of the martyrs who suffered during the Spanish Civil War and the enduring faith of those who remained steadfast in their commitment to Christ.

Blessed Andrea's feast day is celebrated on 3 September, the anniversary of her martyrdom. On this day, Catholics remember and honor her life, praising her selflessness, dedication, and unwavering faith. Through her example, Blessed Andrea Calle González continues to inspire others to live lives of faith, compassion, and service to others.
