Biography

Blessed Amadeu Costa Prat, also known as Blessed Amadeu Costa, was a member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by St. Anthony Mary Claret. He was born on 4 January 1916 in Tona, Barcelona, Spain. Blessed Amadeu Costa dedicated himself to a life of faith and service from a young age, eventually joining the Claretians and making his religious vows on 15 August 1932.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, which took place from 1936 to 1939, Blessed Amadeu Costa Prat was martyred for his faith. On 26 July 1936, he was shot in Lleida, Spain, bravely standing up for his beliefs amidst a time of great persecution. His unwavering commitment to his faith, even in the face of danger, is a testament to his deep spiritual conviction and dedication to Christ.

Blessed Amadeu Costa Prat's feast days are celebrated on 26 July and 1 February as one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs. These feasts serve as a reminder of his extraordinary witness to the Catholic faith and his selfless sacrifice for the sake of Christ and the Church.

Recognizing his martyrdom and the sanctity of his life, Pope Francis venerated Blessed Amadeu Costa Prat on 21 December 2016, decreeing his martyrdom. This important step in the canonization process acknowledges his heroic virtue and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his faith. Subsequently, on 21 October 2017, Pope Francis beatified him in a ceremony held at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification, presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato, was a solemn celebration of his sanctity and his enduring impact on the faithful.

Blessed Amadeu Costa Prat serves as an inspiration to all Catholics, demonstrating the unyielding strength of conviction and the willingness to lay down one's life for the sake of the Gospel.
