Feast Day: December 1
Death: December 1, 1
Blessed Alphonsine Anuarite Nengapeta, also known as Sister Marie Clementine or Clementina Nengapeta, was born in 1941 in Wamba, Orientale, Democratic Republic of Congo. She hailed from a non-Christian family, as the daughter of Nengapeta. However, along with her mother and sisters, she embraced Christianity and took the name Alfonsina.
Alphonsine joined the Congregation of the Holy Family, which was based in Nivelles, Belgium. On August 5, 1959, she made her first religious profession as a nun. Within the congregation, she fulfilled various roles, serving as a sacristan and cook at her house, while also dedicating herself to teaching in an elementary school.
Tragically, during the civil war in the Congo, Alphonsine was captured by opposing forces. Upon attempting to rape her, she valiantly fought off her captors while fervently praying. However, in the face of this fierce resistance, her assailants resorted to beating her to death. Alphonsine's unwavering faith and courageous defense of her chastity resulted in her untimely martyrdom.
For her exemplary Christian virtues, Alphonsine Anuarite Nengapeta was venerated by Pope John Paul II on June 9, 1984, through the issuance of a decree of martyrdom. Following this recognition, she was beatified by the same pontiff on August 15, 1985. Her feast day is celebrated on December 1st in honor of her steadfast commitment to her faith.
Blessed Alphonsine Anuarite Nengapeta stands as a shining example of bravery, devotion, and martyrdom. Her life serves as an inspiration for believers worldwide, encouraging them to remain steadfast in the face of adversity and to defend their faith with unwavering determination.
