Biography

Blessed Alfredo Simóncolomina, also known as Anselmo Simón-Colomina, was a prominent Jesuit priest hailing from Valencia, Spain. Born on 8 March 1877, he dedicated his life to serving God and the Catholic Church.

Blessed Alfredo Simóncolomina began his religious journey within the Society of Jesus. He held positions of great responsibility, serving as the Dean and subsequently the rector of the Colegio de San José in Valencia. Demonstrating strong leadership and dedication, he was later appointed as rector in Sarriá, Spain in 1916. However, due to a reassignment, he returned to Valencia.

During a tumultuous period in Spain's history, Blessed Alfredo Simóncolomina faced immense challenges due to the persecutions of the Spanish Civil War. It was a time of great religious oppression, during which many priests and religious figures were targeted. Despite the dangerous circumstances, Blessed Alfredo Simóncolomina remained steadfast in his faith and commitment to the Church.

Unfortunately, the hardships he faced resulted in several imprisonments. These experiences tested his resolve and faith, yet he remained resolute in his mission to spread the teachings of Christ and provide solace to the persecuted. Tragically, on 29 November 1936, Blessed Alfredo Simóncolomina was martyred at the Picadero de Paterna in Valencia, Spain.

In recognition of his unwavering dedication and sacrifice, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable on 20 December 1999, with a decree of martyrdom. On 11 March 2001, he was beatified by the same Pope. Blessed Alfredo Simóncolomina's feast days are celebrated on 29 November and 2 September, alongside his fellow Jesuits.

Throughout his life, Blessed Alfredo Simóncolomina exemplified the virtues of courageous faith and selfless service to the Church. His enduring legacy continues to inspire Catholics around the world, reminding us of the ultimate price that some paid for their beliefs during difficult times in history.
