Biography

Blessed Alfredo Pellicer Muñoz was a Franciscan Friar Minor who was born on 10 April 1914 in Bellreguard, Valencia, Spain. From a young age, he felt called to the priesthood and pursued his studies in theology. However, as the political landscape in Spain became increasingly tumultuous, Alfredo faced pressure from his family to abandon his religious vocation for the sake of safety.

In July 1936, just days before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, Alfredo made his solemn profession as a Franciscan Friar Minor. Despite the escalating anti-Catholic sentiment and the imminent danger posed by the Republican forces, he remained steadfast in his commitment to God and his religious calling. Refusing to yield to his family's pleas to become a teacher to avoid persecution, Alfredo demonstrated unwavering faith and courage.

Unfortunately, his resolute dedication to his beliefs did not go unnoticed, and soon after his profession, Alfredo was arrested by the anti-Catholic forces. During his imprisonment, he was pressured to renounce his faith and deny God, but he steadfastly refused to do so. His unwavering commitment to his religious convictions ultimately led to his death.

On 8 September 1936, Alfredo Pellicer Muñoz, at the age of 22, was executed by firing squad in Castellón, Spain, around 3 pm on a Sunday. His martyrdom was a testimony to his refusal to renounce his faith, even in the face of extreme adversity. He was laid to rest in the nearby cemetery of Gandia but was later reburied in Bellreguard, Valencia, Spain, on 3 June 1939.

Alfredo's life and sacrifice did not go unnoticed, and eventually, his sanctity and martyrdom were recognized by the Catholic Church. On 11 March 2001, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II, signifying his status as a Blessed. The beatification ceremony took place in Rome, honoring Alfredo's courage, piety, and ultimate sacrifice for his faith.

Today, Blessed Alfredo Pellicer Muñoz is venerated as a martyr and a shining example of a young man who fearlessly held onto his religious convictions, even in the face of grave danger. His relics are enshrined in the parish church of Bellreguard, a testament to his enduring impact and the inspiration he continues to provide to believers around the world. Blessed Alfredo's feast day is celebrated on 4 October, as recorded in the 2001 Roman Martyrology, but is also observed on 8 September on some calendars. Additionally, 22 September is recognized as his feast day in commemoration of his martyrdom during the Spanish Civil War, and 20 November is dedicated to him as one of the Martyred Friars Minor of Valencia.
