Biography

Blessed Alfredo Partesaiz, also known as Alfredo of the Virgin, was born on 2 June 1899 in the town of Cilleruelo de Bricia, Burgos, Spain. From a young age, he displayed a deep devotion to his faith and a desire to serve God. This led him to join the Piarists, a religious order dedicated to education and the formation of youth.

Alfredo made his vows as a member of the Piarists on 13 August 1916, committing himself to a life of religious service. In 1922, he was assigned to work in the Pious Schools in Villacarriedo, Spain, where he dedicated himself to teaching and guiding students in their faith.

Recognizing his potential and dedication, Alfredo was ordained as a priest on 3 March 1928 in Palencia, Spain. As a priest, he continued his work within the Piarists, faithfully fulfilling his duties and ministering to those in need.

However, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, being a Catholic priest became a dangerous occupation. On 17 November 1936, Alfredo was arrested for the crime of being a Catholic priest. He was imprisoned on a ship in the port of Santander, where he suffered harsh conditions and persecution.

On 27 December 1936, Alfredo was presented with an opportunity to save his life. He was "tried" and offered clemency if he would deny his priestly status and affiliation with the Piarists. Despite the grave danger he faced, Alfredo bravely refused to renounce his calling. He chose martyrdom rather than betraying his faith and his commitment to the priesthood.

Tragically, on that very same day, 27 December 1936, Blessed Alfredo Partesaiz was executed. He was shot in the head while still imprisoned on the ship in the harbor of Santander, Cantabria, Spain. His unwavering faith and courage in the face of persecution earned him the title of martyr.

Blessed Alfredo Partesaiz's martyrdom did not go unnoticed within the Catholic Church. He was venerated on 15 December 1994 by Pope John Paul II, who recognized his martyrdom through a decree. Pope John Paul II beatified him on 1 October 1995, honoring his sacrifice and affirming his status as a blessed.

Blessed Alfredo Partesaiz serves as an inspiration for all Catholics, particularly those who face persecution for their faith. His unwavering commitment to Christ and his refusal to compromise his beliefs are a testament to the strength and courage of martyrs throughout history.
